Winter

Winter is a combination of Vata (dry, cold, windy) and Kapha (cold, damp, heavy). It is best to pacify Kapha during winter season with warming herbal teas such as ginger, cinnamon and any warming spices and to eat hearty, spicy soups.
Losing weight at this time of year is quite often a top priority after the round of seasonal parties and festivities that can leave us feeling sluggish and lethargic; it isn’t always easy to follow an eating routine when there is a lot of eating outside of the home and everyone around you is tucking into a variety of tempting, delicious and often not so healthy foods! According to Ayurveda, weight gain may not be solely due to eating too much; other factors such as emotions, insomnia may also be responsible for gaining weight. A simple remedy to help you to lose weight is drinking ginger and lemon tea in the morning and throughout the day.
Abdominal massage (good for the digestive fire and weight loss around the abdomen), and Udvartana (herbal massage) are very good for weight loss and detoxing. Oil massages are especially good in the wintertime; improves the circulation and flexibility, are also anti-aging and can be done at home as part of your daily routine; start with the arms then the legs, abdomen and lastly the face.
As we spend more time indoors in the winter months a daily yoga practice, especially Sun Salutation, is beneficial for weight loss; even if only 3 or 4 rounds. Or try to have a walk out in the fresh air every day; even if it’s a short walk for 20 minutes.

ASTROLOGICALLY
After 2016 many are hoping 2017 won’t be a repeat; it won’t! Whatever lies in store this year; and there are many ways things may play out on the world stage and in our personal life, mystical Neptune in its natural home of Pisces can powerfully unite us through its earthly representation of oil and water. Through awareness, visualisation and perception we may liquefy and transform feelings of isolation into compassion and unity with the Divine. As Pluto moves through Capricorn (2008 to 2023) signifying death and resurrection of the old establishments and institutions it is time to break free! Stand in our own Truth! May your year be uplifting with much joy and Love.

Winter gives time to reflect, to plan for the coming Spring, the coming year, to dream… gaze into the fire and make your wishes in the pictures of the flames!
