HAIR CARE

During winter the elements, central heating at home and in the office and “hat hair” can all play havoc with the hair leading to dry, lacklustre hair, dryness of the scalp and just way too many bad hair days!
Excess dryness (vata) and excess heat (pitta) in the body are factors for hair loss.
Time to tame that unruly mane and put the shine and health back into your hair and be ready for Spring!

Fortunately, Ayurveda has solutions for all year round fabulous tresses!

FOODS: for heat in the body, indicating pitta, avoid: salty, sour, spicy tastes and have sweet (natural sweet), bitter, astringent tastes (usually vegetables) to rid heat from the body. Drinking Aloe Vera juice helps to keep the head and body cool; especially good in the summertime.

MASSAGES: massages are really good for the scalp and hair; using Amla oil (Amla cleanses and gets rid of heat from the body), Brahmi oil, or a combination of both, is very good for preventing hair loss by getting rid of heat and toxins from the body.

HERBS: herbal teas such as fennel and cardamom are very good for getting rid of excess heat in the body and preventing hair loss.
Chyawanprash is a wonderful Ayurvedic jam that is nourishing and detoxifying to the body and it has a high Amla content (the Indian gooseberry, Amla, is high in vitamin C) which makes it excellent for the hair follicles.
Triphala: gets rid of toxins and heat from the body
Turmeric: Ayurveda uses turmeric to strengthen and nourish the hair. Can be taken in capsule form or, the best way to take turmeric, in warm milk.
Brahmi: as well is being good for the hair, is also nourishing to the body and to the nervous system. Can be taken in warm milk or in capsule form.

YOGA: heat travels up the body to the head and if not checked will cause hair loss. The yoga positions to avoid are inverted positions; anywhere the head is going to the ground e.g. downward facing dog, headstands, shoulder stands. Moon salutation is very good to help prevent hair loss by getting rid of excess heat in the body.

(And, it goes without saying that using a mild shampoo is kinder for your hair!)
